How to launch live text widget in existing sidebar panel

Author: Paul Withers
Tags: sidebar widgets
Question: I'm creating a widget with an action based on live text to open in a sidebar panel. However, it opens in a new panel each time, which could end up making the sidebar rather cluttered with some users. Is there a way to launch it in an existing sidebar panel for that widget, and only launch a new sidebar panel if there is not one for that widget? Alternatively, is there a way to programmatically get rid of all sidebar panels associated with a widget, to allow me to clean up the users' sidebar...
